When you need an emergency plumber

A plumbing emergency is anything that’s causing active damage, leaving you without essential services like heat or hot water in winter, or could quickly get worse if left.

Some situations genuinely can’t wait. Burst pipes flooding your home, a boiler that’s gone cold in the middle of winter, a blocked toilet in a property where there’s only one — these need fixing now, not on Tuesday morning. We’re set up for that.

What to do before we arrive

While we’re on our way, there are a few things you can do that often limit the damage significantly:

1. Turn the water off at the mains

The main stopcock is usually under the kitchen sink. Turn it clockwise to shut off the water supply to the whole property. If you can’t find it or it’s seized solid, we’ll deal with it when we arrive.

2. Switch the boiler off at the spur

If the emergency involves the boiler or hot water system, switch it off at the wall spur. This protects the boiler and stops it firing while there’s no water flowing through it.

3. Isolate individual appliances if possible

Washing machines, dishwashers and toilets usually have their own isolation valves nearby — small valves on the supply pipe that you can turn off with a screwdriver. Useful if you only need to isolate one appliance and keep the rest of the house running.

4. Photograph everything for insurance

Before you start clearing up, take photos of the damage. Your home insurance will likely want them, and it’s much easier to do it now than to remember in three weeks.
